Green and red lines in pictures from old camera - damaged sensor?

Hello, I have the need to do some shooting with a telephoto lense, so I found my old Nikon D40 which has a 55-200mm. However, after some test shooting I find that there is a green line horizontally over the photo. There also is a smaller red line. Does this mean that the sensor has been damaged and this is beyond recovery?
