I'm usually a pretty careful guy when it comes to backups. My computer is a huge part of my life, my hobbies, my passion and my work. I know better than to think that I'm immune to bugs, crashes, data losses or human fuck-ups. Yet, every time Lightroom asked me if I wanted to backup my catalog when closing it, I was always a bit annoyed. I guess I wished it would do so without asking me, in the background, silently, and not right as I was quitting the app.Well, today is the day I shut my whore mouth and thank the Adobe gods.Up until recently, my whole photo library (actual files and Lightroom catalog(s)) where inside my Dropbox folder so I could access them remotely. But then I canceled my paid plan and moved all my file back to my Mac's "Pictures" folder. Then I don't know what the fuck I did, probably updated my Lightroom version, upgraded my catalog, or just plain stupidly flushed my Dropbox folder from my catalog and imported my "Pictures" folder, but I just realized today that all my folders pre-dating the switch were missing. But not exclamation-mark-please-update-the-location-missing. Just not part of the catalog anymore.Obviously I kinda freaked out, went to the Pictures/Lightroom folder to check if another version of my catalog would still have all the folders (and more importantly my edits), and for some reason I had like 6 of them, aptly named things like "Lightroom 5 Catalog-2-3-2.lcat". Opened them all but they were all old ones from before the important stuff I wanted back (pregnancy photos, 2-3 trips, baby pictures, thousands of pictures I had carefully edited, a lot of which I hadn't exported to jpegs)."Well that's it, I'll just spend the next 6 months re-editing my whole library!"And then I saw it. A little folder called "Backups", at the top of the list. Weighing a whooping 6 GB, it contained two whole years of catalog backups. A little digging, a little googling, and a little pee in my pajamas later, I merged the two catalogs and shazam, everything's back to normal! I'm never not running a backup again!TL;DR: moved all my pictures, fucked up my Lightroom catalog, lost all my edits. Resigned to re-edit 5 years worth of photos, then found the Lightroom backups folder and everything's good again in the world. When Lightroom asks you if you want to backup your catalog, YOU SAY YES! via /r/photography https://ift.tt/2OqTHb2
