My Z6 has finally arrived, so I took it to the oscilloscope and measured how fast its shutters operate in different photo and video modes. The results: Full frame (FX) photo:Mechanical: 1/340 sSilent 14-bit: 1/20 sSilent 12-bit or JPEG only: 1/38 sUsing 1.2x and 1.5x crop modes improve speed accordingly. Video:4K (FX): 1/45 s4K and 1080p (DX, 1.5x crop): 1/68 s1080p 100/120 FPS and slow-mo (FX): 1/190 s1080p 60/50/30/25/24 FPS (FX): 1/130 s The method I used has been described by Jim Kasson and has the benefit of accurately measuring quickly travelling shutters. Mechanical shutter isn't surprising, slightly faster than on D750, but sync speed is set the same. With the electronic shutter, using 12-bit RAW reduces rolling shutter considerably. I haven't tested how much silent electronic shutter affects the dynamic range.Compared to other full frame cameras, electronic shutter in photo mode looks quite good. Sony a9 is the champion with ~1/150 s. Meanwhile, Sony a7 series cameras are slighlly behind Z6 at ~1/30 s, and Canon EOS R is ~1/13 s. I haven't yet seen if anybody has measured Panasonic S1/S1R electronic shutter travel times. On video side, 4K full frame readout at 1/45 s seems to come from reading 16:9 portion of full sensor at 12-bit precision (1.185x vertical only crop). Extra 1.5x crop to DX mode, accounts for 1/68 s readout that carries on 1080p DX video capture. Full frame 1080p results look very good and exhibit very little rolling shutter, especially 100/120 FPS modes. via /r/photography http://bit.ly/2S2bqqU
