Strobe vs continuous (mixing question)

So whenever I have to do an assignment and have to use strobes but still need the background lit like it would be without strobes, I just lower my shutter speed so more ambient light hits the sensor after the strobe went off.​Now considering going to continuous light to change things up, but how do you deal with this while using continuous light?
