I practice 3-2-1 strategy for data storage backup. My 3rd copy of photo/videos used to be all on DVD/BD disc, but mostly have given up in favor of just HDD.15 years ago 1-2 disc was enough for a whole year worth of family photos etc. Today I would need to burn like 50+ disc. Size of photos and especially 4k video etc has grown a lot. A modern 8TB HDD is equiv to 160 50GB disc. I've gotten lazy burning, too time consuming and takes up physical space. My current strategy is a FreeNAS raid-z2 NAS machine for main storage. It offers bit rot detection which is awesome, snapshots and access to everything at a touch of finger. Secondary copy would be replicated offsite to another FreeNAS machine. Finally my third copy would be just external HDD.The downside of HDD is their shorter storage lifespan as they are not really meant for long term archiving. If I keep upgrading to new HDD or storage mediums then all the data will be kept fresh. Just future generation might have to deal with data rot once I've left this world and not refreshing. So anyone else still backing up to disc media? Anyone using tape backups? Any new method of backup more reliable than HDD? via /r/photography https://ift.tt/2P6VboV
