Got a Nikon D40+18-55mm lens from a friend who had no use for it. Show me where to begin

I am interested in photography and have been for a bit, but I make do with my phone and that's it for the most part. But this one friend of mine had a (apparently quite old) Nikon with him which belonged to his dad and he had no use for it. He said it cannot focus automatically for some reason and that's what wrong with it.So I come here for advice. I've never really used an SLR/DSLR or any dedicated camera at all for that matter, and I am very much interested in learning a thing or two about how to make it run and get good results. I don't think it'll give me great results until I really put in the effort for each photo, but I'm ready to do that and learn on the way. I love taking RAW images and keeping them with me to edit, and I saw this one has the functionality, so I guess that would be great for me.What can I do, learn or watch or read to understand more about cameras and photography now that I do have something to try everything on? Please help me r/photography, I guess it's a start for me. I don't want to pursue it as a career full-time because I am an engineering student already and everything, but I guess photography is my favourite pastime, so I want to learn this thing. via /r/photography https://ift.tt/2PlxM3b
