Looking for some thoughts around the future (and present!) of Lightroom, so i can try and make a decision as to whether to go back to LRAbout 18-24 months ago, after getting frustrated with Lightroom, I sought out alternatives, and landed upon On1 Photo RawThere's a lot I've loved about On1, but recently been wondering if I made the right decision. So what made me move away from LR?- Confusing direction - with the intro of two 'versions' of LR, it wasn't all that clear what direction Adobe were taking with their product- Poor support for working from multiple devices. Whilst not impossible , LR was never really geared towards managing and editing photos from different places (eg Desktop + Laptop)- Utilisation - I wasn't a power user of LR, and wasn't really experimenting enough. I'm only a hobbyist, and was a little intimidated experimenting outside of fairly basic editingSo why On1 PhotoRaw?- Edits live within a side-cart file alongside the raw file, and not in a library file. This meant having On1PR on multiple devices sync'd via, say, Dropbox, makes a lot of sense and works really well- It felt a little more like my hand was being being held along the way - being able to 'stack' and therefore toggle, edits, and things like live-previews of presets etc, made experimenting a little less daunting. On1 also has some more advanced tools that you would have to go to PS for, baked in - so again, it's an easier intro to that world than having full-fat Photoshop thrusted on you- I thought it looked like a nice, unintimidating tool that I would enjoy using (and don't get me wrong, I do!)Why am I now questioning this?- Well, there are a few fundamental things LR still just does better (or On1 doesn't do at all); namely edit history and snapshots - it's really frustrating- There's a lot more support out there for LR than On1 - whether it's extensions, hardware, help etc- I don't feel so much like I need my hand-holding all the time anymore - I generally know what look I'm going for, and broadly how to get there. If anything, I'm now being held back by letting On1 guide me too much- On1 are bringing some interesting Sync/Cloud features to being mobile devices, desktop, laptop all together. It looks brilliant, but is quite an investment, so want to ensure I've done my research!But...I'm still not sure / convinced LR answers my original reasons for looking elsewhere, particularly 1 & 2 - though they're somewhat linked...From what I can gather, LR CC does give us the flexibility to edit and sync across multiple devices (Though presume this is only when using their storage service?)But moving to CC means you miss out of the broader feature-set of LR itself. I'm assuming there isn't a neat way to make these work together nicely? So, I'd love to hear other people's perspective on where they believe (or know) Adobe are taking Lightroom in the coming months - is there a plan to focus on one or the other application, and how are Sync features looking? What big changes have I missed out on? (From what I gather, nothing too fundamental for LR Classic, but could have this wrong)Thank you! via /r/photography https://ift.tt/2AscgoX
