Buying a camera without trying them out?

I'm just wondering if anyone has any input on buying a camera without necessarily trying it out. With covid, local stores aren't allowing people to try out equipment so I can't mess around with any cameras at the store. I want to try to pick between canon and nikon as the FAQ says (and people I've spoken to say) that generally people tend to prefer one brand over the other.
