Question about Nikon D750 and astral photography - first time blunders...

Hello, I went shooting at the Big Cypress Preserve in S. Florida this past Friday and met a very nice gentleman who had many years of this type of shooting. I was having trouble getting things in focus and he recommended that I look in live view and focus on a bright star and get it in focus and then shoot. Problem was I couldn't see anything in the live view viewfinder. The screen was turned all the way up on brightness. Sine he didn't have experience with the 750 he didn't know what to tell me. Is there something I needed to do to see stuff through the view finder in such a dark situation? Or is it impossible to see it under those circumstances. I tried a variety of lenses. The 80 - 200 2.8, 11-16 Tokina 2.8 and a 50mm 1.8 Nikon. via /r/photography https://ift.tt/2mLqfQn
