Better makeup pictures

Hi all! I’m a makeup artist, I am currently doing something else as a living but I still like to experiment on myself or friends. I’d like to keep pictures of my makeup looks but photography wasn’t my favorite subject at school... I’m not very good at it but I would like to improve myself. I can take decent pictures of models but it’s a bit trickier for me to take a picture of myself. I own an IPhone 8plus so that’s what I use. Do you have any tips on what I could do to get better shots? I’ve been recommended to get a light-ring but I’m still thinking about it.
