How to grow a portfolio when you're socially awkward at times?

Does anyone have any advice to growing a portfolio without being super weird? I like taking portraits of people but I've only taken pictures of family members so far and friends. What's a good way to build a portfolio without asking the weird question of " let me take pictures of you" type thing lol.
